I really do wish that we could have been celebrating the release of our new film, Magical Waters, under different circumstances, but after a marathon 4-year project, I think we should be allowed at very least a huge sigh of relief. It's a fishing film, yes, but it's a lot more than that…

There is no question that this film was our most ambitious and complex project to date. We covered twelve different species, across coarse, game and saltwater, above and below the surface, on seven of the UK's most beautiful waters. And just in case that wasn't stretching us far enough, we decided to film only in the best light conditions possible for each scene.

But that wasn't enough either. We all felt that UK angling shouldn't just be about the fish that are easy to catch and film, or even the biggest, for that matter. No, we wanted to show some of the rarest and most fickle fish and also, to catch them using techniques that are the most exciting and tricky to demonstrate, let alone to film. That meant, wherever possible, we had to use stalking and sight-fishing methods in clear waters. Obviously, these conditions didn't exist on all the waters we fished, so we set out to supplement our angling with wildlife and scenic photography, using close-ups and rare footage, again wherever possible.

Now, it's one thing to set oneself difficult goals. And let's be honest, we all do that during the course of an average fishing season. But I think it would be fair to say that we already had our work cut out, even before the trouble started. At this point, I'm not going to post a litany of the extraordinary events that surrounded the making of Magical Waters.   One day, we might write the book. But clearly the passing of our dear friend, the celebrated artist John Searl, was the hardest of all. Equally, we don't intend to dwell on that tragic occurrence here, partly because the film says it all, in a far more eloquent manner than we can express in words.

So, after four years filming, we found ourselves making not just an angling and wildlife film, but also a poignant story about the last few casts of a brilliant artist and a truly astonishing angler.

Overview of the Films

DVD 1: 'The First Cast'; Duration 65 mins.

Sight fishing for huge barbel on the Hampshire Avon.

Wading and float fishing for tench on Frensham Great Pond, featuring the 'ballet of starlings' at sunset.

Floater fishing for genuine wild carp on a previously 'undiscovered' still water.

Spinning and float fishing for estuary mullet and bass at Christchurch Harbour.

DVD 2: 'The Last Cast'; Duration 68 mins.

The stalking and sight fishing for gigantic chub in clear water conditions.

The story of the trout and the mayfly.

Sight fishing for Atlantic salmon, with angling legend, Dave Steuart, including rare film of a fish taking the bait underwater.

Spotting the 'fish of a lifetime', a huge roach stalked.

An epic battle with the apex predator, esox lucius, the northern pike.

Attempting to fool big bristling perch on a small river.

A frozen moment in time with the Ice Age fish, the grayling.

We really hope that you will enjoy this film, because we believe it is a depiction of our sport at its very best. More than that, we have tried to create a portrait that depicts the beauty of our wildlife and countryside in a sensitive and atmospheric way.
